We have always been close followers of online privacy issues and wouldn't want anyone knowing more about us than we think they should. It seemed that almost everyone we spoke to had the same opinion about this. Why then were no companies taking a different stance about legal implications and spuriously vetting their marketing services to check that they conformed to tight standards; protecting consumer privacy while also getting the best long term deal for marketers.
We worked on defining just what was and what wasn't a direct infringement of personal privacy. Sure there will still be voices of dissent about anything online marketers do, but at least we know that we are doing our best to balance the equation by not using practices that we wouldn't like used on us personally.
Online privacy advocates also needed to be assured that we were going to live up to our claims, so we created as transparent a service as possible and contacted the main proponents before going ahead to make sure they agreed with our perspective.
We are totally against the use of Adware/Spyware or any secretive activity aimed at gathering information surreptitiously about users habits, or that intrudes on what we view as a person's private space. We do however believe that individual websites that clearly tell their users about activities on the site that will be used for marketing purposes have a right to do so.
In our opinion it's about the right to have a choice in the matter.
